Questions

1. In which year was the sale per rupee of share capital highest?

A. 2008            B. 2009             C. 2010              D. 2011

In the above question, it is important that you solve the table first. Here the total of all the years and data is given. You just need to find that missing data based on the total sum.

Here the share capital for all the given years is 711. But the share capital for 2010 is not given. So, the share capital in 2010 will be 711 – (310 + 98 + 98) = 205. Similarly, you can also solve and find that sales for 2009 were Rs. 2620 lakhs. Profit before tax for 2011 is Rs. 790 lakhs, dividends for 2009 will be Rs. 30 lakhs and retained earnings for 2008 will be Rs. 140 lakhs.

In the above question, we are required to find the sale per rupee for the year being highest. So, we will take sales of every year given to us and divide it by the share capital. Thus, for 2008 it will be 3270/98 = 33, for 2009 it will be 2620/98 = 27. Similarly, for 2010 and 2011, it will be 24 and 21 respectively. So, you can see that the asked ratio is highest for 2008. So, the correct answer is A.

More Questions

2. Based on the above given years, in which year was the percentage addition to reserve over previous years reserves was the highest?

A. 2008             B. 2009             C. 2010               D. 2011

Now, we are given in the question that retained earnings can also be considered as the reserves. Furthermore, it is given that the reserves at the start of 2008 were 80 lakhs. So, the addition for the year 2008 was 140/80 x 100 = 175 %. For the second year, the base will be the addition of reserves in 2008 i.e. 140 + 80 = 220. So, the percentage increase in reserves in 2009 = 70/140 x 100 = 50 %.

Similarly, we will calculate for 2010 and 2011. For 2009, the % will be 245/290 x 100 = 84.4 %. And for 2010 it will be again less 100 %. So, the highest addition in reserves will be in 2008. So, the correct answer is A.

4. In which year was the income tax the lowest?

A. 2008         B. 2009        C. 2010                D. 2011

It is given in the question that the income tax will be calculated by subtracting dividends and reserves given from the profit after tax in the respective years. So, for 2008 the income tax will be, 315 – 30 – 140 = 145.

Similarly, the income tax for the subsequent years will be:
For 2009: 170 – 30 – 70 = 70
In 2010: 525 – 60 – 245 = 220
For 2011: 790 – 110 – 400 = 280

Thus, income tax will be lowest for the year 2009. So, the correct answer is B.

5. In which year was the profit after tax per sales was the highest?

A. 2008            B. 2009           C. 2010             D. 2011

The profit after tax is given to us. We need to find the ratio of PBT/sales for the years given.
In 2008, it will be 315/3270 = 0.09
For 2009, 170/2620 = 0.06
In 2010, 525/4725 = 0.11
For 2011 PBT/sales will be, 790/6435 = 0.12.

Thus, you can see that PBT/sales were highest in 2011. So, the correct answer is D.
